Terrero Pacheco Performance Horses is one of the premiere quarterhorse breeders in the US. We have some of the greatest bloodlines in reining and cutting in our barn. Our horses are all bred and trained to be excellent show animals as well as horses that can be used to work the ranch. We call it the Dual-Purpose Training Method.
One of my first experiences watching my husband train horses came when we were newlyweds, living in Venezuela. We were out at the ranch one day, and as I sat in the sun and read Monty Roberts “The Horse Whisperer”, my husband was starting a young colt. As I sat there in the blistering sun, reading about a man with a unique gift of being able to communicate with horses, I witnessed my young, strapping husband perform the exact same techniques of the seasoned veteran and author of my book. Imagine my surprise as I read about Mr. Robert’s non-violent and supposed ‘unique’ methods and looked up to see my husband doing the same exact thing.
No, my husband had not learned his trade from Mr. Roberts, but from a lifetime of practice. Growing up on a ranch, my husband was riding Treno, his trusty horse, before he could ride a bike. More interested in doing for himself than having someone else do for him, he learned at a very early age how to care for and train the four-legged beauties. My husband has always been a very simple man who is not impressed with material things. As a child sent to military school with several pairs of new shoes and suits, he would sell off his new things keeping only the very minimum for himself. He saved his money this way until one day he bought his own horse and kept her boarded and groomed for almost 2 years before he ever even told his parents. He was 8 years old.
And so began his love affair with horses. Much like any love affair, it has brought its share of heart-pounding excitement and heartbreaking disappointment. We have celebrated great moments in the show ring, suffered devastation in our hearts, and total wipeouts of our savings in our shared love affair of all things equine, yet we would do it all over again for the wonderful moments we have shared with our horses.
