Yesterday I got home from work and I pulled into the barn to see the dogs. We have 4 ranch dogs that actually live at the barn. They are all male and big. Very big. Despite being tall enough to probably ride, they are all incredible gentle and sweet dogs and my son loves them so much.
I greeted the dogs and headed out to the pasture where I could see hubby cutting apart a fallen tree. We are making fireplace mantles out of the trunk for the log cabin and they are going to be beauty-full… breathtaking.
Before too long, I heard the honk of the horn and looked over my shoulder to see my son pulling up in the mule with all of the dogs on board! He was taking them for a ride.
It is the funniest thing I have ever seen to see this 6 year old munchkin hop into a mule, start it up, back out of the barn and toot the horn. The horn lets the dogs know that it’s time to hop on, so they do! Imagine what a sight this is to see a little guy chauffeuring around 4 large dogs.
They all love it.
Just like dogs do when riding in cars with the windows down, the dogs pant and smile and enjoy the fresh air on their faces. Each one sits in his respective spot as if they were human. Short of strapping on their seat belts, they do everything that my boy does and it is beyond cute.
They went joyriding in the mule, which amounted to 3 full laps around the barn. We kept a watchful eye on little D as he escorted his canine friends, but we allowed him the freedom to do so. Part of the joys of growing up as a ranch kid, I guess. He drives responsibly, much more mature than his young 6 years would indicate, and he would move heaven and earth for those dogs.
His best friends.
They are wonderful companions and always up for fun. It was a fun way to wind down the day and a joy to watch. Blissful ranch life…. the best.

I am totally going to need to see a photo of this! I can just see it now, four dogs, bigger than the kiddo, all having the times of their lives- kid included. Priceless!
